Mrs. Hanayik, Reading Resource Teacher
The Reading Resource program at WHES is multi-faceted. The reading specialist collaborates, models, and coaches teachers in the classroom setting using current and up to date word study, writing, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and structural language artsí instruction and procedures. She also organizes and participates in individual and small group instruction as needed for intervention and extension of K-5 students including English Language Learners.
A significant portion of the reading resource job is to generate and organize the materials needed for student assessment and classroom lessons such as multiple copies of trade books for guided reading in an organized book room, mentor texts for lessons, and professional materials. Along with this, comes the added responsibility of developing activities to generate funds. There is a Bake Sale for Reading in September, a Barnes and Noble Night in October, and grant writing.
Washington Henry Elementary School provides and supports many reading activities created at our own school as well as local, state, and national programs. Some of these include:
Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI)
UVA Book Buddy Program
January Reading Month
Summer Reading Program
March National Read Across America Day
October Read for the Record
One School, One Book Program
If you have any questions about what these programs are or how they
are done at WHES, feel free to contact the reading resource teacher,
