Mission Statement

The mission of Hanover's Social Studies Program is to prepare students for informed, responsible citizenship to strengthen our democracy and for success in a global society.  By promoting student-centered and cross curricular instruction, we help them understand the world as it was in the past and as it is today so that they can work to the future.

Philosophy

Social Studies is a study of the world, and the heritage of people and the interaction of political, economics, social, and environmental systems.  The purpose of Social Studies is to help students develop the skills to be effective citizens in a democratic society and an interdependent world.

Curriculum and instruction should enable students to develop:

  • civic responsibility and participation
  • knowledge and skills of history, geography, economics, and civics of the United States
  • an understanding of peoples of the world including history, geography, political, and social institutions and economies
  • problem solving and thinking skills essential to decision making
  • appreciation for the democratic form of government
  • effective use of technology and other forms of research and communication to process, evaluate, and apply information
  • knowledge and skills of Social Studies to place themselves and their heritage in perspective relative to the ever-changing world.
