Orchestra Program of Studies

 

Beginning Strings - Grade 6

Course No. EL26 Year

This class is for students who wish to learn to play a stringed

instrument. No experience is necessary for the class. Students will

receive assistance from the instructor in order to make an appropriate

choice of instruments. The emphasis of the class will be on

skill development. Students must acquire a string instrument after

approval by the teacher.

 

Beginning Strings - Grades 7 and 8

Course No. EL30 Year

Students must furnish instrument although limited school owned

instruments are available. This course is available to any student

who wishes to learn to play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello,

and string bass) and has had no prior instruction on a string instrument.

The emphasis is on basic fundamentals and techniques

needed to play a string instrument.

 

String Ensemble - Grades 7 and 8

Course No. EL28 Year

Prerequisite: Beginning Strings

Students must furnish instrument although limited school owned

instruments are available. This class is available to students who

have had prior string experience on the violin, viola, cello, or

string bass. The emphasis is on basic fundamentals of music and

advanced string techniques. Several public appearances will be

scheduled throughout the school year.

MUSIC

String Ensemble - Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12

Course No. FA35 Year - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Placement by audition

Students must furnish instrument although limited school owned

instruments are available. Emphasis is placed on ensemble playing

and progressive technical study. A variety of music literature is

studied and performed.

 

String Orchestra - Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12

Course No. FA42 Year - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Placement by audition

 

String Orchestra (Advanced) - Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12

Course No. FA46 Year - 1 Weighted Credit

Prerequisites: Written test, audition, 2 years sequential secondary

music with a 3.0 or higher (ex. Grades 7 & 8); written contract

upon acceptance

Students must furnish instrument although limited school owned

instruments are available. Emphasis is placed on ensemble playing

and progressive technical study. A variety of music literature is

studied and performed. A high degree of skill in musicianship and

performance is required.
