Guidance Classes 2009-2010
We will be focusing on three main domains in our bimonthly guidance classes this year, as in years past. Those domains are academic, personal/social and career skills. We begin with our academic skills by discussing test taking strategies, listening and following directions, learning styles, organization, goal setting and school preparedness. We continue our lessons in the personal/social domain by discussing bullying, conflict management, friendship, feelings, sharing and accepting responsibility. We conclude our guidance classes by examining careers with our annual Career Day being our culminating activity. It is important for students to begin to examine what their interests and skills are in elementary school to begin their career path in middle and high school.
As part of our comprehensive school counseling program here at WHES, I run groups covering a variety of topics here at school. These topics include:
This is not an exhaustive list but just a few examples. Groups are run during recess as to minimize missing instructional time. Please call if you feel your child would benefit from any of these small groups.
Individual counseling is offered to students who have various needs on a daily basis to students attending WHES. Students can self refer, or be referred by teachers, parents or administrators. Please know that these counseling sessions do not constitute mental health counseling but are, in fact, geared towards ensuring the student has a successful academic experience. I do, however, have a list of outside mental health agencies available at any time if so necessary. Please do not hesitate to call at any time if I can be of assistance in any way.
I distribute a monthly newsletter with information more specifically about the guidance classes, in addition to many other items. There is a parent resource corner highlighting websites, books, resource centers, etc. that may be of interest to you. Also, there are announcements about particular things, such as rising sixth grade registration. Tips are included about specific parenting concerns, such as how to get through the holidays and still maintain your sanity! Towards the spring there is information about summer camps. And finally, there is information provided about tutoring opportunities here at WHES. Please peruse these and contact me at anytime if you have any questions or concerns.
